This project involved the design and construction of a bespoke event space styled as a traditional railway station, built for outdoor events at Bar Silo, Cornwall. The brief was to create a distinctive, characterful structure that could serve large gatherings while becoming a focal point of the venue.
At the heart of the design are reclaimed Victorian cast iron columns, which formed the starting point for the entire build. Each column was carefully positioned on levelled concrete footings, with the structure designed around them to ensure both accuracy and long-term stability. The finished pavilion spans approximately 21 metres, incorporating six columns and a long, covered platform-like form.
Traditional dagger boards and period-inspired detailing were used throughout to reinforce the railway station aesthetic. The space accommodates a large walk-in fridge for venue use, along with generous under-cover seating, making it well suited to outdoor events in all weather. Finished with train station–themed memorabilia, the result is a practical yet immersive space that combines structural engineering, reclaimed materials, and playful design.

A CAD design of the train station structure, developed after surveying the site’s slope and overall area to accurately plan levels and layout.

Using a telehandler to carefully position the incredibly heavy cast iron columns onto their cast concrete plinths.

Installing the roof using box section corrugated sheets, including integrated roof lights - 47 sheets in total to cover the full structure.

Each dagger board was custom made and fixed to the frame, with dead-straight lines in both axes to achieve a crisp, authentic train station aesthetic.

Finishing touches added with vintage suitcases, framed luggage labels, and maps showing historic GWR routes that once served the local area.
